Gabriel G. Gonzales

A member of Oak Valley Clan of Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico potter Gabriel G. Gonzales has received numerous awards for his art work at prestigious shows including the Santa Fe Indian Market and Heard Museum show in Phoenix AZ.  Gabriel learned how to make pottery from his mother, Presingula Gonzales, and Uncle, Donald Chinana, both of whom are well-recognized Jemez Pueblo potters. At the age of 15 he was developing his own pottery style, experimenting with natural clays and slips. He was fascinated and inspired by the “melon” design, after seeing a pot by his fellow tribes-woman, Juanita Fragua, who was the first Jemez potter to do spiral swirled melon designs.

Today, Gabriel Gonzales is recognized as one of the best pueblo potters. His elegant and sophisticated pottery is hand-coiled, hand-carved, and stone-polished, as is the Jemez Pueblo tradition. His style is characterized by a satiny smooth, gleaming finish and deep carving. The designs may be traditional in origin, but the result is fresh and contemporary. His work is always entirely hand made, from gathering the clay through the stone polish and pit firing. Gabriel is meticulous in his work. In order to achieve the crispness in the carving and polishing he often adds more detail until he is totally satisfied with his results. His pottery, identifiable with his signature style, is exceptional and unique in shape, form and design, and, also ever-changing is subtle yet striking ways.
