Mary Small

Native American potter and sculptor Mary Small of Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico, works clay in the traditional coiling method of her ancestors.  This method includes the use of clays dug on Jemez land and hand-painted with clay glazes which are fired outdoors over cottonwood coals after each application of color.

She and her husband, Ivan Small, developed the delicate matte gray slip, polychromatic style, and intricate all-over decoration that distinguishes Mary's pieces from other Native American potters.

IACA Artist of the Year for 2002, Mary Small's highly collected pottery can be found in the Heard Museum, the Denver Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution.
